This new release of Trickster brings some of the features that you, our dear customers, have requested. So please keep your requests coming. Visit our Trickster Suggestion forum on the support portal to start public discussions into feature requests and to vote on other people’s suggestions.
We’ve designed a Light theme for the file list. You can select it in Trickster’s Preferences.
Trickster usually shows QuickLook previews of files in the Expanded row mode. With a new option added in this release, Trickster can now only display generic file icons. This behavior can be useful when you’re more concerned with what application will open the file than with its content. Text files can especially benefit since their preview provides little information about their content.
Did you know you could drag files from Trickster (or from Finder) unto folders in Favorites sidebar and have them moved or copied (by holding the Option key) there? If you didn’t know, try it — we created the sidebar with this use-case in mind.
Previously, though, Trickster silently failed to move or copy when the destination folder already contained a file by that name. Now Trickster will detect this and suggest to overwrite the file, if you want. The original file will be moved to Trash, just in case. Unfortunately, this behavior might fail on macOS Sierra because of increased protection of /Applications folder by the system.
When you have no entries in a section of the File Tracking Configuration or when editing Filters, Trickster will now display a description of what this section means and how to edit it.
Trickster will now fail less to monitor folders that you want it to monitor. It now correctly detects when it doesn’t have permission to monitor it. And to help you see when it fails, the File Tracking Configuration panel will mark these watched folders with a yellow exclamation mark.
In the screenshot below, Downloads and Applications are not working anymore, and their permissions need to be refreshed.
Select the folder, Downloads in this example, and a button titled “Refresh permissions” will appear (see screenshot below). Click on it. Trickster will remove Downloads from the list and will present an “Open Dialog” with Downloads folder selected. Just click the “Refresh Permissions” button on the bottom left of this dialog to add Downloads back with the new permissions.
Now you don’t need to wonder if a folder is monitored by Trickster or not, because of Sandboxing permissions.
We sincerely hope you like the changes.
May beautiful moments and happy memories surround you with joy this Christmas and always!
Version 2.5 of Trickster adopts the new Touch Bar in the 2016 MacBook Pro models.
The Touch will now always display a button to open the “File Tracking Configuration” dialog. In addition, it’ll allow to quickly visually change current filter and, when a file is selected, has a handy button to reveal the file in Finder.
Hopefully, the happy customers of the new MacBook Pros will find this integration handy.
The update is available both from the Mac App Store and from our site. If you already have a direct (non-Mac App Store) version of Trickster, you can use the built-in auto-updater.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity!
We’ve updated Trickster with a new feature and some bug fixes.
Specifically, we’ve added a preference that can disable Finder folders from showing in the “All Files” list. Some users don’t like it that folders appear in the main list when they navigate in Finder. Note, Folders will still appear in filters that are set to show folders.
This new option is selected by default:
Other changes:
We removed the dialog that would sometimes appear when Trickster detected potential problems with its watched folders (related to Sandboxing). If you don’t know what it means, don’t worry. Some users experienced a stuck Trickster because of that, and it’s not something we’d want you to experience.
We also fixed the sometimes disappearing text after editing text in filters and in Tracking Settings
Thanks to the customers who gave the suggestions and reported the issues.
Lastly, we’ve added a note that “Watch Folders” also includes all the subfolders of these folders. We’ve added this everywhere it made sense, including in the User Manual.

Not really related to the release, but we’re adding articles sections to our site and one section is about Mac Productivity, where we’ll post some tips related to the topic. Click to read the Mac Productivity articles we have now.
We’ve released an update to Cashculator that fixes some bugs and improves some aspects of usability, especially the state of the application after it restarts.
Update is available both directly from our site and from the Mac App Store. If auto-update through the application doesn’t work, you can download the new version.
If you’re a Twitter user, it’s also a good time to connect to Cashculator’s Twitter account. While it’s kind of new, it might surprise you.

Watch the video below to learn how you can easily share scans from your iPhone to your Mac and have them appear automatically in Trickster for further processing. This workflow is something that we often use ourselves and it can save a lot of time.
In this “how-to” video we demonstrate how to watch iCloud Drive folders for specific apps in Trickster, using Scanner Pro by Readdle as an example.
You can use similar approach with other apps on your iPhone that share data through iCloud Drive. Of course you can also do the same when sharing files between your Macs through iCloud Drive.
